Draft PPS18: Renewable Energy
Annex 1 Energy from Waste (Thermal Processes) Technology: Scale of Development
D19. Energy from Waste plants vary in size from small installations (serving factories for example) to large-scale MSW plants. New projects therefore might either be accommodated within existing or converted buildings, or may require large new sites.
D20. The costs of meeting stringent licensing standards mean that MSW plants using incineration need to achieve economies of scale to be viable. Incinerators in the UK have a waste throughput of in the region of 100,000 to 600,000 tonnes per year. A MSW plant consuming 400,000 tonnes of waste per year will produce approximately 34MW of electricity, enough to supply about 46,000 homes.
