PPS 8: Open Space, Sport and Outdoor Recreation
Policy Context: The Quality Initative
In January 1996, the Government introduced the Quality Initiative to Northern Ireland with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of good design and quality in the built environment, particularly in new housing developments. Quality development is now one of the key themes that defines the Department’s approach to planning. Recent policy contained within PPS 7 – ‘Quality Residential Environments’
and associated planning guidance emphasises the importance of open space provision in new residential developments, and acknowledges how its provision can enhance the quality and sustainability of the residential environment and contribute to people’s health, well-being and quality of life.
