Site of Local Nature Conservation Importance

The following site DH 06 lies partially within the Settlement Development limit of Doagh and is designated as a SLNCI as identified on Map No. 8a - Doagh and Map No. 1 - Newtownabbey Countryside and Map No 8c - SLNCI.

A Site of Local Nature Conservation Importance is designated for Doagh in accordance with PPS 2 Planning and Nature Conservation. The site is identified on the basis of its flora, fauna or earth science interest. A detailed description of its characteristics are provided in the Countryside Assessment Technical Supplement.
This SLNCI is also designated as an Area of Constraint on Mineral Development at Designation NY 05 (See Countryside and Coast Section).
Policy for the control of development in this SLNCI is contained in Policy ENV 2 in Part 3, Volume 1 of the Plan.

Local Landscape Policy Areas (LLPAs)

The following sites DH 07- DH 11 are designated as Local Landscape Policy Areas as identified on Map No. 8a – Doagh and clarification Map No. 8d - Doagh Local Landscape Policy Areas.
These LLPAs lie within or adjoining Doagh and fall partly within the surrounding Newtownabbey countryside. They are considered to be of the greatest amenity value, landscape quality or local significance and must be protected form undesirable or damaging development.
Policy for the control of development within LLPAs is contained in Policy ENV 3 in Part 3, Volume 1 of the Plan.
Designation DH 07 Local Landscape Policy Area Doagh River Corridor
A Local Landscape Policy Area is designated at Doagh River Corridor as identified on Map No. 8a – Doagh, Map No. 1 – Newtownabbey Countryside and Map No. 8d – Doagh Local Landscape Policy Areas showing the full extent of the LLPAs affecting the settlement of Doagh.
Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below:-
  • Area of local nature conservation interest – Doagh River corridor, millraces, millpond, with associated vegetation.
Designation DH 08 Local Landscape Policy Area Burn Road
A Local Landscape Policy Area is designated at the Burn Road as identified on Map No. 8a – Doagh, Map No. 1 – Newtownabbey Countryside and Map No. 8d – Doagh Local Landscape Policy Areas showing the full extent of LLPAs affecting the settlement of Doagh.
Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below:-
  • Locally significant building and its surroundings – Ballyhamage House and grounds, with associated planting, traditional farm buildings, rookery and significant vegetation.
Designation DH 09 Local Landscape Policy Area Mill Road 1
A Local Landscape Policy Area is designated at Mill Road as identified on Map No. 8a – Doagh, Map No. 1 – Newtownabbey Countryside and Map No. 8d – Doagh Local Landscape Policy Areas showing the full extent of the LLPAs affecting the settlement of Doagh.
Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below:-
  • Listed building and its surroundings – Fisherwick House, including grounds and associated planting. The house was originally an 18th century hunting lodge, although the present single storey house dates from 1805.
Designation DH 10 Local Landscape Policy Area Mill Road 2
A Local Landscape Policy Area is designated at Mill Road as identified on Map No. 8a – Doagh and Map No. 8d – Doagh Local Landscape Policy Areas showing the full extent of the LLPA affecting the settlement of Doagh.
Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below:-
  • Locally significant building and its surroundings – Jubilee Villa and grounds, together with significant vegetation.
Designation DH 11 Local Landscape Policy Area Station Road
A Local Landscape Policy Area is designated at Station Road as identified on Map No. 8a – Doagh, Map No. 1 – Newtownabbey Countryside and Map No. 8d – Doagh Local Landscape Policy Areas showing the full extent of LLPAs affecting the settlement of Doagh.
Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below:-
  • Archaeological monument and its surroundings – A graveyard and scheduled Norman Motte is located on the east bank of the Doagh River beside a medieval church site. St Mary’s medieval church is situated on the high ground. There are also traces of other archaeological remains in the area including souterrains and enclosures.
