Proposal MNY 24 Non Strategic Road Scheme Hightown Road Link
The following Non Strategic Road Scheme is identified on Map No. 2a – Metropolitan Newtownabbey
The Hightown Road Link will facilitate improved accessibility to the development land in the Mallusk area.
Developers will be responsible for funding the scheme either in full or in a substantial part. DRD’s priority for funding will be concentrated on the construction of major capital work schemes on the Strategic Transport Network. Any contribution towards developer led schemes will be subject to detailed economic appraisal, the availability of funding and inclusion within the major works programme.
Proposal MNY 25 Relocation of Rail Station Jordanstown
The scheme to relocate Jordanstown rail station is identified on Map No. 2a – Metropolitan Newtownabbey.
The current station access and egress is unable to safely cater for peak levels of demand. The relocation of the station at Jordanstown on the Belfast –Carrickfergus Line is proposed to the east of the existing station to facilitate safer access to and from the station by providing better pedestrian access, parking and pick/up set down facilities and the opportunity for bus and rail integration. It provides the opportunity to provide a better pedestrian linkage with the University of Ulster and support greater use of rail by students and staff. It will eliminate conflicts between rail passengers and road traffic which currently give cause for concern.
Proposal MNY 26 Park and Ride Scheme (Revised) Jordanstown
Jordanstown Park and Ride scheme is identified on Map No. 2a – Metropolitan Newtownabbey
This Park and Ride will facilitate the relocation of Jordanstown station and provide opportunities for the integration of different modes of travel.
Policy for the protection of transportation schemes is contained in Policy TRAN 2 in Part 3, Volume 1 of the Plan.
