Ards and Down Area Plan 2015
Ards Borough: Donaghadee Transportation
Plan policies and proposals affecting road traffic and the longer-term development of transportation in Donaghadee are set out in the Transportation Section of the Plan.
Donaghadee is not on the Regional Strategic Transport Network, however it is served by a number of arterial roads, Warren Road, Bangor Road, Newtownards Road, Killaughy Road and Millisle Road. The main roads to Newtownards and Bangor, the A28 and B21, are protected routes.
All of these routes converge on the town centre and into the one – way system along High Street, Bridge Street, Shore Street and New Street. Due to the high levels of through traffic, on-street parking and the lack of rear servicing provision for the existing shops, the town centre is frequently congested at peak times.
In allocating land for future development, the traffic generated by the additional housing and its potential impact on the town centre was carefully considered.
A road scheme, to be provided in accordance with Policy TRAN 2 in Volume 1 of the Plan, is identified under the relevant land use proposal, DE 11, above.
Development of the zoned lands between the Newtownards Road and the Cannyreagh Road is expected to have limited impact on town centre traffic. In the longer term, development of the town in a compact form and the construction of a housing distributor road within the zoned lands, offers the prospect of relieving the pressure on the town centre, created by local traffic.
