The Department of the Environment's 'Strategic Planning Policy Statement for Northern Ireland' - Planning for Sustainable Development (SPPS), has been published in final form following a period of extensive engagement with key planning stakeholders.
This publication sets out the Department’s regional planning policies for securing the orderly and consistent development of land in Northern Ireland under the reformed two-tier planning system. The provisions of the SPPS must be taken into account in the preparation of Local Development Plans, and are also material to all decisions on individual planning applications and appeals.

Calls for Evidence

Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan announced ‘Calls for Evidence’ on strategic planning policy for Development in the Countryside and Renewable Energy on 7th March 2016.

Synopsis of Consultation Responses / Public Responses

The Department of the Environment's consultation draft 'Strategic Planning Policy Statement for Northern Ireland' - Planning for Sustainable Development (SPPS), was published on the 4th February 2014, and the consultation ran until the 29th April 2014.
A synopsis of consultation responses detailing some of the main issues to emerge from the public consultation has also been produced and is available for download.

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)

The Department has also published with the SPPS its Strategic Environmental Assessment - Environmental Report and Post Adoption Statement which have been undertaken in accordance with the European Directive 2001/42/EC ‘on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment’ and the Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programmes Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004.
