Stage 1: Assessing the Travel Characteristics of a Development: Research on measures to influence modal split
Many research projects have been undertaken to measure the effect on modal split of measures varying from new light rail networks to traffic calming, and persuasion campaigns. Research findings sometimes contradict one another, and it must be recognised that many measures designed to encourage access by means other than the car will only have a minor effect when introduced on their own. As part of a package of measures, however, their impact can make a significant positive impact. Research to investigate the combined impact of a range of measures is emerging and in the future will be of use in preparing Transport Assessments.
