Design Guide for Rural Northern Ireland (Summary)
Landscape design is essential to a successful scheme. The main landscaping of a development site should be part of the overall design reflecting the character of the locality. Professional advice is available to assist with this important aspect of development in the countryside. From the point of view of the Department the emphasis will generally be on the boundaries of the site.
Existing boundaries, hedges, walls and other significant landscape features should be retained and protected during construction, wherever possible. When it is necessary to remove such features, for example in the provision of visibility splays, they should be reinstated. The existing features should be augmented by appropriate additional landscaping to reinforce boundaries, provide shelter and to screen and integrate buildings.
