Background
Castlewellan’s unique layout and impressive natural setting combine to create a town of historical and visual significance. Founded where the ancient road from Newry to Downpatrick crossed an elevated spur, it blends comfortably wit the surrounding countryside. It siting is accentuated by the directness of its major approach roads which, flanked by low walls and tall trees, create an excellent sense of arrival.
The historic core of the town has remained virtually unchanged since it was laid out in the mid 18th century. Its character and history is reflected in its squares, streets, buildings and landscape setting. The boundary of the areas is also a reflection of the town’s evolution and progressive development.
