Draft PPS18: Renewable Energy
Annex 1 Small Hydro Technology: The Turbine House

E11. The building houses the turbine, generator and ancillary equipment, and is typically a single storey building of between 3 metres by 4 metres for a small domestic scheme, to 10 metres by 10 metres for a large grid connected scheme. Occasionally, particularly on old watermill sites, the machinery may be located in an existing building. Vehicular access to the turbine house is required for construction and maintenance purposes.
E12. To minimise the length of the tailrace, and to maximise the available head, the turbine house is usually located close to the watercourse.
