Draft PPS18: Renewable Energy
Annex 1 Energy from Waste (Biological Processes) Technology: Gas Handling Equipment

C24. The collection, movement and storage of gas will require a range of equipment, including pipework and valves, flame traps, condensate traps, flare stacks and control and monitoring equipment. In some cases gas needs to be treated, necessitating the addition of extra plant such as filters and de-misters.
C25. The flare stack used for burning off surplus gas comes in two basic types:
  • high level stacks, typically 6m to 10m high with a small diameter; and
  • low level stacks, typically 3m high with a larger diameter.
The flare stack can be enclosed in an open-topped cylinder to provide visual concealment and heat insulation.
