Policy Context: Rural Development Strategy

2.9 The Rural Strategy 2007 – 2013 Opens link in a new browser window was published by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) on 9 October 2006. The Strategy provides a broad strategic context for rural policy which takes account of the aims and objectives of the Regional Development Strategy (RDS). Key themes include diversification of the rural economy, the protection of the rural environment and the need to sustain rural communities. The Strategy is organised around 4 key aims:
  • developing the role of DARD as ‘rural champion’;
  • improving performance in the marketplace;
  • conserving and investing in the rural environment; and
  • strengthening the social and economic infrastructure of rural areas.
2.10 In addition, DARD’s Strategic Plan 2006 – 2011 Opens link in a new browser window has amongst its stated goals the strengthening of social and economic infrastructure in rural areas as well as the development of a more sustainable environment.
