Northern Area Plan 2016
Strategic Plan Framework: Environment and Conservation Sites of Local Nature Conservation Importance
In accordance with PPS 2: Planning and Nature Conservation, 209 Sites of Local Nature Conservation Importance (SLNCIs) are designated within the Plan area. Their distribution is indicated in Table 6.2 below and they are designated in the relevant District Proposals in Volume 2 of the Plan.
Table 6.2 Designated SLNCIs in Each Council Area
| Council Area | Number of SLNCIs |
|---|---|
| Ballymoney Borough | 36 |
| Coleraine Borough | 45 |
| Limavady Borough | 51 |
| Moyle District | 77 |
| NAP Total | 209 |
Such sites are of local nature conservation importance on the basis of their flora, fauna or earth science interest.
Development likely to have an adverse effect on designated SLNCIs will not be approved. In assessing development proposals on or adjacent to these sites, priority will be given to the protection of their intrinsic nature conservation interest.
Exceptionally, where development is permitted which might adversely affect the intrinsic nature conservation interest, the Department will endeavour to ensure that such adverse effects are kept to a minimum and that appropriate mitigation measures are implemented.
Planning permission where granted will be subject to conditions to guide developers on the necessary compensation measures such as the provision of new or enhanced habitats or features or for improved management. Where appropriate, developers may be asked to enter into a Planning Agreement to secure these outcomes.
