Introduction: Policy Context
The Plan is prepared within the context of the overall priorities of government and takes into account those European, National and Regional policies which have implications for the future pattern of development within the Plan Area.
European and UK Context
The European Union and the United Kingdom have embraced the principle of sustainable development based on stewardship of the environment. This principle has been widened in its scope to include both economic and social considerations. The five principles of the UK Government Sustainable Development Strategy, Securing the Future (DEFRA, March 2005) are:
- living within environmental limits;
- ensuring a strong, healthy and just society;
- achieving a sustainable economy;
- using science responsibly; and
- promoting good governance.
