Banbridge / Newry and Mourne Area Plan 2015
District Proposals: Cullyhanna
|
Cullyhanna is located approximately 18 kilometres south west of Newry. It is situated just west of the A29 Newtownhamilton to Dundalk road.
The village lies to the west of the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB). The character of this landscape provides a distinctive setting for the village. It is set in a landscape of rolling drumlins with broad areas of wetland, bog and attractive winding rivers in inter-drumlin hollows. The Cullyhanna River and its associated river corridor vegetation frame it to the southwest. To the north the settlement is bordered by a distinctive raised landform, which is visible from the southern part of the village. Lands to the west and east are generally more gently undulating.
This is one of the smaller villages within the Newry and Mourne District. The majority of development, mostly comprising public sector housing, is concentrated at the centre of the settlement between the Slatequarry Road and the Tullynavall Road. More recent development has occurred to the northwest and southeast of the village along the Skerriff Road and the Tullynavall Road. A small infill residential development has also taken place adjacent to the Cardinal Ó Fiaich Heritage Centre.
Cullyhanna is a service centre with a range of facilities including St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, a primary school, community centre and playing field. The focal point of the settlement is the community and heritage centre at the junction of Slatequarry Road and Freeduff Road. The settlement also has a public house, post office and a number of local shops.
| Designation CA 01 Settlement Development Limit |
|---|
| A settlement development limit is designated as identified on Map No. 3/12 – Cullyhanna |
The settlement development limit is designated to take account of land with extant planning permission for housing and sites that have not yet been approved but which are at a stage in the planning application process where there is a reasonable expectation that planning approval will be granted. The settlement development limit also takes account of the role of the settlement whilst protecting its natural setting. In this regard the previous development limit is amended to exclude the important landscapes to the periphery of the settlement, in order to protect the rural setting of the settlement.
