The settlement development limit is designated to take account of land with extant planning permission for housing and sites that have not yet been approved but which are at a stage in the planning application process where there is a reasonable expectation that planning approval will be granted. The settlement development limit also takes account of the role of the settlement whilst protecting its natural setting.
There are two settlement nodes identified for Sheeptown. The most northerly node is located immediately east of a crossroads on the Rathfriland Road. It primarily comprises older social housing and more recent private residential estates. There is also a public house and an engineering works. The development limit has been drawn to consolidate the present settlement form and to prevent development to the west of Rathfriland Road or further ribboning to the south and east. The southerly node is drawn to consolidate the existing development, which comprises a church, primary school, playgroup and a number of private dwellings along Sheeptown Road.
