Designation KE 01 Settlement Development Limit
A settlement development limit is designated as identified on Map No. 3/35 – Killeen.

The settlement development limit is designated to take account of land with extant planning permission for housing and sites that have not yet been approved but are at a stage in the planning application process where there is a reasonable expectation that planning approval will be granted.
Two separate settlement nodes have been designated for Killeen. The most northerly node has been designated to allow for consolidation of the existing settlement appropriate to its role while protecting the setting and views of St. Michael’s Church. The southern node allows for some small-scale development in the vicinity of the primary school whilst discouraging further ribboning along Killeen School Road. The development limits around both these nodes also take into account the location of this settlement within the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Social Housing

The Housing Need Assessment has identified a social housing need of 3 dwellings for Killeen. It is envisaged that this will be met through the development control process.

Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Killeen is located within the Ring of Gullion AONB as identified on Map No. 3/35 – Killeen. The AONB was designated in 1991 under the Nature Conservation and Amenity Lands Order (Northern Ireland) 1985 in recognition of its exceptional scenic quality.

Local Landscape Policy Area (LLPA)

The following area is designated as a LLPA. Policy for the control of development within LLPAs is contained in Policy CVN 4 in Volume 1 of the Plan.

A LLPA is designated as identified on Map No. 3/35 - Killeen.
Those features or combination of features that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this LLPA are listed below:
  • St. Michael’s Church on a prominent landform with extensive views of the surrounding area;
  • The setting and views of the church from the surrounding area.
