The settlement development limit is designated to take account of land with extant planning permission for housing and sites that have not yet been approved but are at a stage in the planning application process where there is a reasonable expectation that planning approval will be granted. The settlement development limit also takes account of the role of the settlement whilst protecting its natural setting.
The settlement development limit acts to protect and consolidate the linear and compact form of this settlement whilst preventing ribbon development and encroachment into the surrounding countryside. The limit is drawn to protect the views and setting of the listed St. Brigid’s RC Church, to avoid development eastwards into the landscape setting of Glassdrumman Lough and to avoid westward development beyond the crestline at St. Brigid’s Primary School.
