The BMA Green Belt is designated under Designation COU 1 as set out in Part 3, Volume 1 of the Plan and the portion within Newtownabbey District is identified on Map No. 1 - Newtownabbey Countryside. The BMA Green Belt which applies to Newtownabbey District covers all rural areas to low Watermark outside the designated Metropolitan Development Limit and settlement development limits and part of the designated BMA Coastal Area. Carnmoney Hill, a prominent local landmark is also designated as BMA Green Belt as identified on Map No. 1 – Newtownabbey Countryside.
In Newtownabbey the outer edge of the Green Belt as identified in BUAP 2001 remains unchanged however additional lands are designated as BMA Green Belt in accordance with alterations to the Metropolitan and Settlement Development Limits. Lands previously identified as ‘Whitelands’ in the BUA 2001 at Jordanstown and at Monkstown are now designated as BMA Green Belt. An additional area to the north of Ballyclare at Rashee Road and an area to the south of the settlement are also designated as BMA Green Belt.
Proposals for development within the BMA Green Belt will be considered in accordance with prevailing regional policy and the Plan Proposals.
