Designated in August 2000, Kings Road Conservation Area is bounded by Knock Road to the east and for most of its northern boundary by Green Road. Sandown Road and the disused railway track (Nature Walk) form the western and southern boundaries respectively. The area is centred on a section of the King’s Road, which has a mature suburban landscape with large trees and mature gardens. The Conservation Area is identified on Map No. 4/004 – Belfast City and Map No. 7/005 –King’s Road Conservation Area.
Policy BT 022 King’s Road Conservation Area Additional Design Criteria
The following additional design criteria shall apply to Kings Road Conservation Area:-
  • New dwellings shall be detached or semi-detached. Terraced, town house or apartment developments will not normally be permitted;
  • The size, plot ratio and ratio of footprint to open space in new developments shall be compatible with those of the historic character and appearance in the immediate neighbourhood;
  • All new or replacement structures on a site shall be located so that the relationship between the existing buildings and the site boundary is retained;
  • Development shall not include the removal of trees and areas of soft landscaping between the building line and the boundary of the road or footway; and
  • Hedging or other boundary treatment in new developments shall be in keeping with those traditionally used in the area.
