Planners Consult on Coleraine Housing

Published on Wed, 5 Apr 2006
The Planning Service has published an Issues Paper for the Coleraine Borough Houses in Multiple Occupancy Subject Plan.
A spokesperson said: "There has been much public debate surrounding the increasing number of Houses in Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) and the concentration of such accommodation in the Coleraine Borough particularly in the "triangle" towns of Coleraine, Portstewart and Portrush.
"The Draft Northern Area Plan includes policy relating to HMOs but members of the public have expressed concern that this does not go far enough and in particular lacks a spatial dimension.
"We consider that a Subject Plan which specifically addresses HMOs within Coleraine Borough is an appropriate way of developing policies for the Borough including those areas where HMOs are concentrated.
"This is an opportunity for the community to get involved in the process of developing planning policy for Houses in Multiple Occupation within the Borough. As part of the consultation process, we will appoint consultants to positively engage with representative groups from the local community."
The issues surrounding HMOs are diverse and need to be tackled in a multi-disciplinary way through partnership with other relevant bodies. The Subject Plan represents only one strand of a comprehensive strategy for tackling HMOs and the Planning Service will work together with other key agencies in preparing the plan.
The spokesperson added: "We would encourage the people of the Coleraine Borough to get involved in this community consultation exercise and express their views on the issues to be addressed in the preparation of the Subject Plan."
