DOE Gives Permission To Replace Warrenpoint Rectory
Published on Fri, 28 Feb 2003
The DOE’s Planning Service is to grant permission to Canon Kearney to replace the Rectory of the Church of Mary, Queen of Peace, Clonallon Road, Warrenpoint.
This is not a listed building and suffers badly from dry and wet rot.
A DOE spokesman explained: "Planning Service has carefully considered the application for the demolition of the existing building, which is not listed, and erection of a two-storey dwelling to replace it. While refurbishment may have appeared the most preferable option, there are clear reasons why this has not proved feasible.
"The condition of the building is seriously in disrepair internally with the existence of dry and wet rot and it would require significant external works to make the structure weatherproof and deal with problems of rising damp. It is also unlikely that the dwelling could be adequately refurbished to meet the parish needs without radical and major extensions, which would likely compromise its original character."
Notes to Editors
A recommendation to approve demolition and replacement was made to Newry & Mourne District Council on 6 January 2003 and the Council accepted this recommendation.
