Reform Programme for the Planning System

Background

A comprehensive programme of reform for the planning system in Northern Ireland was launched by Environment Minister Arlene Foster on 29th November, 2007.
The reform programme will incorporate a range of medium to long-term measures with legislation to support the reform programme being brought forward by 2011.  The programme will address all the key elements of the planning system including development plans, policy and development control.

A Planning White Paper on the proposals for reform is scheduled to be published for consultation later this year.  In the meantime, a number of operational short-term improvements continue to be put in place.

The reform programme and the implementation of future decisions in relation to the  Review of Public Administration and any transfer of responsibility in planning functions are closely linked and will be taken forward in an integrated way.   Further details are available via our Review of Public Administration page.
