Development Plans

Why are Development Plans important?

Development plans are very important because they offer a vision for the future of an area and provide guidance on how land is to be developed and used over a 10 - 15 year period; set out policies and proposals for the area; and give the public, developers and interested parties a clear idea of what will or will not be acceptable development in particular parts of the area.
Types of Plan
Development plans include:-

"Area Plans" which set out key strategic policies as a framework for local planning; and,

"Local Plans" which set out more detailed policies to guide development in your locality.

Development planning also includes Regional and Sub-Regional Development Strategies.

How can the public become involved?
The public will have an opportunity to comment on proposed planning policies for their area each time The Planning Service prepares, revises or replaces a plan (see Appendix 2). The purpose of public consultation is:

to provide information about the plan;

to gather the views of the public on a wide range of subjects; and,

to allow public views to be considered throughout the preparation process.

Opportunities for public involvement will be widely advertised in the local press.
