Do I need to appoint an agent/consultant ?

You are under no obligation to use an agent or planning consultant. However if you
are unfamiliar with the planning process in Northern Ireland, you may wish to consider
appointing an agent or planning consultant to act on your behalf.

There are over 1,000 firms of planning consultants in the UK and Republic of Ireland
offering the services of a Chartered Town Planner (an MRTPI or FRTPI).

These firms range in size from those with one or two planners to large multi discipline
 firms with teams that include other professionals such as architects, surveyors, and
engineers as well as town planners.

Chartered Town Planers offer a wide range of planning related services. These include:

  • Submission of planning applications;
  • Appeals against refusal of permission and enforcement action;
  • Representation at Development Plan Local Inquiries or Examinations in Public;
  • Site appraisals and feasibility studies;
  • Preparation of Development Briefs and Master Plans;
  • Research and report writing.

Where can I find a planning consultant?

Information on planning consultants in Northern Ireland can be obtained by using the online directory of planning consultants, produced by Croner.CCH in association with the RTPI.

The Directory allows you to search and identify the most appropriate planning consultant.

A leaflet with details of consultants in your area is also available from the RTPI's Planning Consultants Referral Service. Contact them at info@rtpiconsultants.co.uk

Northern Ireland Planning Aid

The Northern Ireland Planning Aid service has been established by the RTPI's Irish Branch (Northern Section) and receives casework enquiries from individuals and those community groups that do not qualify for assistance from Community Technical Aid (CTA). A referral service has been developed between Planning Aid and CTA. Office is staffed on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Advice is given on a wholly voluntary basis by members of the RTPI.
