Policy REC 5 Water Recreation Uses

This policy has been superseded by: PPS8-Open Space,Sport and Outdoor Recreation 271KB Proposals for recreational development associated with watersports on lakes and waterways will be given favourable consideration where the development does not have an unacceptable impact on the amenity of the area or lead to water pollution. Water related sport is an important leisure activity and our lakes and waterways are important recreational resources. Water recreation can vary from the more tranquil uses such as angling and sailing to noisy watersports including power boat uses. Management plans for particular water areas deal with the compatibility of such varying demands. Development associated with watersports uses such as slipways,boathouses and parking areas/access roads requires planning permission.It is the general intention of the Department to conserve the character of inland lakes and waterways and to protect them and their surroundings from development which may be detrimental to this chriacter. Northern Ireland has an extensive former canal system which provides an important potential recreational and tourist resource. Development proposals which would prejudice the use and future development of this system will be resisted.
