POLICY SP 14 Nature Conservation
This policy has been superseded by:
PPS2-Planning and Nature Conservation
pdf document 310KB
To Safeguard sites and features of nature conservation interest.

There is a wide variety of nature conservation interests throughout the countryside and in many urban areas. The survival of wildlife populations and the maintenance of the full diversity of geological and physiographical features will require the wise management of the total land resource.

Sites of nature conservation interest will be identified in the Countryside Assessments undertaken in the preparation of development plans. Nature conservation interests will be taken into account in the formulation of proposals, and conservation requirements will be integrated into the plan.
Where appropriate, an environmental appraisal of development proposals will be carried out.
Conservation and enhancement of the natural environment will be encouraged and promoted.

The Department attaches great importanceto its commitments, under international obligations, to the protection of species and habitats. Nature conservation will, therefore, be considered in
assessing planning applications generally. Defined areas, which are intrinsically valuable or vulnerable to damage, will be protected and development, which would be likely to affect them adversely, will not normally be permitted - see policies CON1 and 2.
