Education
Responsibility for the
provision of educational facilities in the Borough rests
mainly with the North Eastern Education and Library Board (NEELB),
the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) and the
Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE).
The Department has been
advised by CCMS that there is a requirement for a new
primary school at the Hightown Road to serve the Glengormley
area. Further details of this education provision
requirement are set out within the Key Site Requirements for
the Hightown Road, adjacent to Holybrook Manor, zoning Ref
MNY 05/21.
Further education facilities
in the Borough are provided at both the North East Institute
at Whiteabbey and the University of Ulster, Jordanstown
campus.
University of Ulster,
Jordanstown
Jordanstown is one of four
University of Ulster campuses in Northern Ireland providing
teaching, learning and recreational facilities and is
renowned for its innovative research and development. The
University of Ulster is proposing to invest significantly in
education and learning facilities at the Jordanstown Campus.
Their Sports facilities are
being refurbished and improved including the provision of an
indoor running track, sports hall, all weather hockey
pitches, and investment in their existing pitches. A new
National Research Centre focusing on rehabilitation linked
with the Sports Institute for Northern Ireland is also
planned.
A new Science Park is
earmarked for the campus, adjacent to the University within
Carrickfergus District (identified in Carrickfergus District
Plan as zoning MCS 02), providing education related
employment opportunities which will include technology &
business uses.
Libraries
The North Eastern Education
and Library Board (NEELB) is responsible for library
provision within Newtownabbey and there are three libraries
located within the Metropolitan Newtownabbey area in
Glengormley, Monkstown and Rathcoole.
Health
Northern health and Social
Services Board (NHSSB) are responsible for healthcare
provision within the Borough. Homefirst Community Trust and
United Hospitals Trust provide community health, mental
health and social care services within Newtownabbey Council
Area including the provision of health facilities at
Whiteabbey hospital.
Community Facilities
Metropolitan Newtownabbey
provides a wide range of community facilities including
eight community centres and 80 youth organisations
functioning out of a variety of venues such as schools,
church halls and youth centres.
Policy CF2 in Part 3, Volume 1
of the Plan facilitates the provision of further education,
community and cultural facilities during the Plan period.
