Whitehead
The Natural Environment
 

 

Site of Local Nature Conservation Importance (SLNCI)

The following site, WD 04 lies partially within the Settlement Development Limit of Whitehead and is designated as a SLNCI as identified on Map No. 5a – Whitehead and Map No. 5c - SLNCI.

                                   (Blackhead to Whitehead)

A Site of Local Nature Conservation Importance is designated at the Antrim Coast (Blackhead to Whitehead) as identified on Map No. 5a – Whitehead and Map No. 5c - SLNCI.
 

A Site of Local Nature Conservation Importance is designated in Whitehead in accordance with PPS 2 Planning and Nature Conservation. The site has been identified on the basis of its flora, fauna or earth science interest. Detailed descriptions of its characteristics are provided in the Countryside Assessment Technical Supplement.

This SLNCI is also designated as an Area of Constraint on Mineral Development at designation CE 06 (see Countryside and Coast section).

Policy for the control of development in SLNCIs is contained in Policy ENV 2 in Part 3, Volume 1 of the Plan.

A portion of the Coast North and South of Cloghan Point SLNCI as designated at CS 18/05, is situated within the Settlement Development Limit of Whitehead as identified on Map No. 3c – SLNCI.


Local Landscape Policy Areas (LLPAs)

The following sites WD 05 - WD 08 are designated as Local Landscape Policy Areas as identified on Map No. 5a – Whitehead and clarification Map No. 5b – Whitehead Local Landscape Policy Areas.


These LLPAs lie within or adjoining Whitehead and fall partly within the surrounding countryside. They are considered to be of greatest amenity value, landscape quality or local significance and must be protected from undesirable or damaging development.

Policy for the control of development within LLPAs is contained in Policy ENV 3 in Part 3, Volume 1 of the Plan.

                                   Whitehead

A Local Landscape Policy Area is designated at Whitehead as identified on Map No. 5a- Whitehead and clarification Map No. 5b – Whitehead Local Landscape Policy Areas showing the full extent of LLPAs affecting the settlement of Whitehead.

Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below: -

  • Attractive vistas and localised hills - Bentra and Carnbrock Hills, Muldersleigh Hill, cliffs at Blackhead, Bentra Golf Course and Whitehead Golf Course;

  • Areas of local nature conservation interest - Significant woodland, river corridor and the Beach Road Bird Sanctuary; and

  • Locally significant buildings and their surroundings - Blackhead Lighthouse and the Old Quay.

A Local Landscape Policy Area is designated at Chester Avenue and Marine Parade as identified on Map No. 5a - Whitehead and clarified on Map No. 5b - Whitehead Local Landscape Policy Areas showing the full extent of LLPAs affecting the settlement of Whitehead.

Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below: -

  • Archaeological monument and its surrounding – Castle Chichester is a scheduled monument.

Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below: -

Listed buildings and its surrounding – Coastguard Cottages and gardens.

A Local Landscape Policy Area is designated at Cable Road as identified on Map No. 5a - Whitehead and clarification Map No. 5b- Whitehead Local Landscape Policy Areas showing the full extent of LLPAs affecting the settlement of Whitehead.

Those features, or the combination of features, that contribute to the environmental quality, integrity or character of this area are listed below: -

  • Locally significant building and its surroundings – A rectory situated on a site with mature trees, providing an attractive landscaped entrance to the Conservation Area.
