Greenisland Area of Townscape Character
is situated around the Greenisland railway junction and along the
Station Road and Upper Road. It includes terraces located close to the
station on narrow roads with well-stocked gardens, mature trees and
boundary hedges which contribute significantly to the character of the
Town.
Greenisland developed around the important railway junction on the
Belfast to Ballymena line, which was built by the Belfast and Northern
Counties Railway Company from 1845 onwards. It remained an important
railway junction until the early 1930s when a loop line was completed
and reduced the role of Greenisland in the rail network. The railway was
a major employer as well as an important mode of transport, reflected by
the two long terraces of narrow railway workers’ houses.

The Shore Road Area of Townscape
Character is located along the Shore Road and includes Victorian and
Edwardian detached villas with large gardens and mature trees. This is a
coastal area on which detached villas have been built since the early
nineteenth century. The essence of the character of the Shore Road area
is in the quality of its houses and the coastal landscape setting of
mature trees.
It is likely that during the lifetime of the Plan the strategic A2 road
widening scheme will impact on this area (Plan Proposal GD 06, A2 to
Carrickfergus).
