Greenisland

Greenisland’s access to the rail network has made a significant contribution to
its residential character and growth. The completion of the cross harbour bridge
and opening of Great Victoria Street Station provides direct access from the
Town to Belfast City Centre. There is also direct access to quality walking
routes and the National Cycle Network at Jordanstown.
The Greenisland section of the A2 between Ravenhill and Silverstream has been
identified by the BMTP as a bottleneck on the BMA’s strategic network and is the
only section of two lane road between Carrickfergus and the M5 at Whiteabbey.
There is significant congestion in this corridor at peak times and diversion to
other unsuitable roads.
Strategic Road Proposal

Proposal GD 06 Strategic Road
Scheme A2 to Carrickfergus
|
|
The following Strategic Road Scheme is
identified on Map No. 4a – Greenisland: -
Widening of the A2 at Greenisland between
the Carrickfergus Borough Council Boundary at Jordanstown and Island Park,
Greenisland on the Carrickfergus Transport Corridor.
|
This road scheme involves widening of
the A2 at Greenisland between the University of Ulster, Jordanstown and
Island Park, Greenisland from one lane in each direction to two lanes in
each direction. The widening scheme will deliver significant economic
and environmental benefits by relieving congestion and reducing the
extent of slow moving traffic at peak times.
The BMTP also proposes measures which will reduce car usage and
encourage the use of other modes of travel, the development of an
integrated network of Quality walking routes including improved links to
the rail station at Greenisland and improvements to local bus services.
