Carrickfergus
Education, Health and Community Facilities

 
 

Education

Responsibility for the provision of educational facilities in Carrickfergus rests mainly with the North Eastern Education and Library Board (NEELB), the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) and the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE). The Department of Education has a management responsibility for maintained and integrated schools.

NEELB have advised the Department that a new primary school is likely to be required in the Town within the early stages of the Plan period however a site has not yet been identified.

NEELB currently provide a library within the Town as well as access to nine mobile libraries that serve the Education Boards rural population.


Health

Northern Health and Social Services Board (NHSSB) are responsible for healthcare provision within the Borough. Homefirst Community Trust provides community health, mental health and social care services within Carrickfergus Council area.


Community Facilities

There are four community centres within Carrickfergus and thirty eight youth organisations operating out of a variety of venues such as schools, church halls and youth centres.

Consultation with Carrickfergus Borough Council has identified a need for the Plan to safeguard land for a new community centre as set out below.

Proposal CS 31  Community Facility Edenvale Avenue,
                            Eden

 
  0.72 hectares of land at Edenvale Avenue, Eden are identified for a community centre as indicated on Map No. 3a - Carrickfergus.

Lands at Rosganna Drive, Edenvale Avenue have been identified by Carrickfergus Borough Council as being required for a community centre, to be developed in 2005/2006.

Policy for the control of development on land identified for the provision of new community facilities is contained in Policy CF 1 as set out in Part 3, Volume 1 of the Plan.

Policy CF 2 in Part 3, Volume 1 of the Plan facilitates the provision of further education, community or cultural facilities during the Plan period.
