Historic Park, Garden and Demesne

Designation CE 01   Historic Park, Garden and Demesne
                                  Castle Dobbs
ex

The Castle Dobbs Historic Park, Garden and Demesne of Special Historic Interest is designated as identified on Map No. 1- Carrickfergus Countryside and Map No. 8q - Castle Dobbs.

The demesne was established in the 16th Century and is the only example in the Borough of a planned landscape surviving in its historic form. The present house dates from 1730 and stands in a splendid position overlooking Belfast Lough and the County Down shore. There is remaining evidence of the formal gardens for the 17th Century house, which is now in ruins adjacent to the later house. The present layout is in relation to the 18th Century house and takes the form of a landscape park, with a lake, bridge and cascade.

This area will be detailed in a register of Historic Parks, Gardens and Demesnes of Special Historic Interest in Northern Ireland to be published by the Environment and Heritage Service, DOE. This register will summarise the historical significance of each site and the contribution such planned features make to the local landscape. It will also seek to encourage the public and owners, to value and support the protection and maintenance of such sites.

Prevailing regional policy for the protection of historic parks, gardens and demesne of special historic interest is set out in PPS 6 Planing, Archaeology and the Built Heritage. Additional information is contained in the Countryside Assessment Technical Supplement.
