Londonderry Conservation Areas

Background
The Historic City Conservation Area was designated in February 1977, while the Clarendon Street Conservation Area was designated in February 1978. A review of these Conservation Areas was launched on the 10th June 2004. Following publication of the review documents the Department invited representations over a twelve week period ending on the 1st October 2004. Derry City Council and Historic Buildings Council were also formally consulted at this time.
Public consultation
During the period of public consultation, the Department received a number of representations relating to the review of the Conservation Areas including Derry City Council, Historic Buildings Council and Foyle Civic Trust. The Department carried out a comprehensive review of responses received and views were carefully considered.
New Conservation Areas
As a result of this review and to complement and build upon the achievements up to this point, the boundaries of the existing Conservation Areas have been varied by the Department and the new Magee Conservation Area has now been designated.
The variation of the Historic City and Clarendon Street Conservation Area and the designation of the Magee Conservation Area have been prepared under Article 50 of the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 by the Planning Service, an Agency within the Department of the Environment.
The Department is now in a position to publish the revised and new Conservation Areas. Conservation Areas within the Derry Area Plan District are:
- Historic City Conservation Area
- Clarendon Street Conservation Area
- Magee Conservation Area
Designation takes immediate effect from 6th June 2006.
